Drugs of abuse or addiction that also cause lowered defenses or amnesia are involved in hundreds of thousands of rapes each year, but due to the amnesia, a young woman may not know exactly what happened after wards.

There’s a long list of drugs that are becoming popular aids for the would-be rapist. They can enable the criminally-minded person to slip a tasteless or nearly-tasteless chemical in a person’s drink while they have turned away or perhaps left their drink behind while they dance. Statistically, the most vulnerable group for this type of attack is a young woman, very often one at school or college.

When the woman feels sick or dizzy after fifteen or 20 minutes, the rapist can then help her to her car or offer to take her home, where he then completes the rape. The young woman wakes up the next morning, knowing something is very wrong, feeling sick, but not being sure what occurred. According to one estimate by the Department of Justice, there are 375,000 drug or alcohol-facilitated rapes just among women on American colleges.

“A rape of this kind is just one of the many things that can go wrong in an environment of substance abuse,” warned Bobby Wiggins, spokesperson for Narconon. Narconon is an international non-profit organization dedicated to the elimination of substance abuse and addiction through effective drug rehabilitation and drug education. “Especially among college students, there are also much higher rates of accident, injury, failures in school and even death among those drinking or using drugs.”

Drugs that are Used

Some of the drugs used to make women unable to defend themselves against rape include: Rohypnol (flunitrazepam), a benzodiazepine, but much stronger than the more common Xanax: In American states along the southern border, Rohypnol is easy to get as it is sold across the counter in Mexico. In other areas, it sold by prescription for sleeplessness.

Alcohol: Its big advantage is that it is legal and considered an “excuse” for unacceptable behavior, particularly on college campuses.

GHB: This drug is often used by body builders to burn fat. It may be stored in a small dropper bottle for easy addition to someone’s drink.

Ketamine, a veterinary anesthetic: This drug acts as a dissociative, meaning that it can cause hallucinations or a dreamlike or detached state.

Ecstasy and methamphetamine may also be used to facilitate rapes. In a circular fashion, drug-facilitated rapes may themselves engender more substance abuse. Women who have been raped are thirteen times more likely to abuse alcohol and 26 times more likely to abuse drugs.

“While some women are slipped a drug without their knowledge and then raped when they are unable to resist, far more women experience sexual assaults after they have willingly consumed drugs or alcohol,” advised Wiggins. “By far the best way to prevent assault is to avoid drug or alcohol abuse entirely. This keeps a young woman safe from addiction, drug or alcohol-related health problems, assault and unwanted pregnancy.”

December's gas explosion in Mexico that killed 28 may have resulted from drug cartel interference in gas pipelines.

There are those who claim that the choice to abuse drugs harms only the user. The logic continues that the substance abuser should have the right to choose. The lie in this claim shows up when you examine the collateral damage connected with the trade and abuse of illicit drugs.

First is the cost associated with substance abuse and the addiction that so often results. To calculate the cost, one must figure in the cost of law enforcement and drug interdiction, the judicial system and incarceration, the healthcare system, foster child care and substance abuse treatment. The result is an average bill of more than $1200 for each American.

Collateral damage shows up at every point of the trade. In the national parks of California and Kentucky, for example, clandestine marijuana plots guarded by armed guards endanger hikers and park rangers. In inner cities, the crack cocaine trade is commonly associated with high levels of violence. And in Mexico, more than 30,000 people have died as drug cartels fight over turf.

On the 20th of December 2010, a horrific gas explosion destroyed part of Texmelucan, Mexico, killing 28 people. It is suspected that Los Zetas, a particularly vicious drug cartel, were responsible for tapping into major gas lines so they could steal gas and oil. The gas leak reached the river and caused fires to flash down the river and through the streets. Narconon is an international organization dedicated to eliminating substance abuse and addiction through drug rehabilitation and drug education.

Tijuana, El Paso and Nogales, Arizona are hotspots of drug trafficking and violence. But across the US, more than 200 cities report substantial activity by Mexican drug cartels. More cities, particularly in urban centers on the East Coast, report drug trafficking activity also by Jamaican, Dominican, Asian and African gangs.

No corner of the United States is completely free of drug trafficking. Every person who is freed from addiction is one more person not contributing to crime and violence associated with the trafficking and sale of drugs. And that’s in addition to the fact that each person freed from drugs now has a chance at a productive, enjoyable life once again.

Narconon is an international organization dedicated to eliminating substance abuse and addiction through drug rehabilitation and drug education. Helping people recover stably from the grip of addiction is the specialty of Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers around the world. In more than forty countries, seven out of ten graduates stay clean and sober after they return home.

Illicit drugs or prescription drugs being abused mean that there are substances in the household that can easily kill children.

Tragically, it is far too easy to find stories of children whose lives are destroyed or even snuffed out due to the abuse of illicit or prescription drugs by someone in the household. In November 2010, a baby died after drinking liquid methadone that was left in a sippy cup. The toxicology report showed that the baby body showed had four times the recommended dose for an adult. The child’s caretaker, who had been dating the father of the child, had a history of drug arrests.

The abuse of illicit drugs or prescription drugs can be a cause of disaster not only for the person who becomes addicted but also for family members and friends. Narconon is an international organization dedicated to eliminating drug abuse and addiction and preventing substance abuse through education. Family members may find themselves bankrupt due to their extensive efforts to save the addict’s life and children are helpless in the face of drug-related neglect, abuse or accidental poisoning.

A brief examination of news sources reveals that this type of tragedy is repeated all too often across the U.S. In Pennsylvania in 2009, an accidental dose of methadone took the life of a 23-month old child. The police responding to the call found drugs and drug paraphernalia in the home.

And in Palm Beach County, a 21-month old child died after finding cocaine and the pain killer OxyContin during the night and eating it. The baby was dead when the mother tried to wake him up in the morning. His little body held enough drugs to kill an adult. The mother’s boyfriend, in the home the night the baby died, had previously been arrested for possession of drugs.

The fact of addiction means that even a well-meaning person is unable to stop abusing the addictive substance despite harm and despite the danger to the family. That’s when those around the addict need to intervene and find an effective rehabilitation service. Getting the addict to rehab may save the life of more people than just the addict himself or herself.

The Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation center is a safe refuge for those addicts who know the time has come to eliminate drug or alcohol abuse from their lives. This long-term residential program, delivered in centers across the U.S. and around the world, has proven to enable seven out of ten graduates to live sober, drug-free lives after graduation.

National survey shows that more than seven million youth start using drugs every year and millions more underage drinkers start using alcohol.

When a child meets their parents over dinner, few of them start off the conversation with a statement like, “Gee, mom and dad, I got stoned today for the first time.” But for more than seven million of our youth, this is a fact.

It’s marijuana use for most of them. More than six million youth start using marijuana each year. But for 171,000, it’s cocaine and another 375,000, it’s Ecstasy. Half a million find inhalants, probably somewhere around the house, and try that.

And these figures don’t even include the nearly four million underage drinkers who get started consuming alcohol each year.

“A recent study tried to make the point that marijuana use does not lead to harder drugs,” advised Bobby Wiggins, spokesperson for the Narconon® drug education and drug rehabilitation program. “But the kids themselves feel differently. According to our youth, 78 percent feel that the use of marijuana increases the likelihood of using other drugs. And they should know. They are seeing it every day, in their friends or even themselves.”

The national survey of teens on attitudes about drugs, executed by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), added more insight. While you think your child is doing homework or at the mall, are they actually finding or using drugs? Nearly half the children (ages 12 to 17) surveyed thought it would be “fairly easy” or “very easy” to acquire marijuana if they wanted to. About 13 percent considered it easy to lay their hands on LSD or heroin.

But what about legal drugs? More than 900,000 youth start abusing prescription medication each year. That means that every hour of every day, all year round, more than 100 teens dip into a purse, steal a few pills out of a medicine cabinet or get some pills from a friend and give a pain reliever or a sedative or an other prescription drug a try.

“Parents are really the best drug prevention program out here,” added Bobby. “They are with the child the most hours and know their habits the best. They can perceive the changes in habits, schedule or activities that are a tipoff for drug use. And by their constant willingness to speak out against any kind of drug use, they can influence youth to stay away from drugs. By survey, those children whose parents were adamantly against drug use and talked to their children about the subject were less likely to abuse drugs and alcohol.”

Preventing youth from starting to use drugs is the goal of the Narconon drug prevention curriculum that is taught around the world. By actual test, the eight-part curriculum lowers substance abuse. While the Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation program can bring an addict out of their addiction into a productive, enjoyable life, it’s far better to teach youth to avoid drugs in the first place.

Cocaine use in pregnancy is associated with a long list of deformities and other pregnancy difficulties including miscarriage.

We think of pregnant women as glowing with pride during the term of her pregnancy. But not every mother-to-be takes care of herself in a way that is best for the health of her unborn baby. A mother-to-be who abuses cocaine leaves herself open to a tragic list of complications and even the possibility of miscarriage.

Cocaine is a stimulant drug that creates stress on the mother’s heart, brain, lungs and other organs. Cocaine speeds up the heart and increases blood pressure while it constricts the arteries that provide the heart with blood. Mothers-to-be risk heart attack, seizures and strokes, even when young.

When a pregnant woman takes cocaine, the drug goes right through the placenta into the baby’s body. It also clears from a baby’s body more slowly than it does the mom’s, meaning that there is a greater chance for damage to be done.

“What is ironic is that teenaged pregnant women have rates of drug abuse nearly twice the rate of young women who were not pregnant,” stated Bobby Wiggins Spokesperson of the Narconon drug rehabilitation program. Narconon is an international organization dedicated to helping young people avoid substance abuse and rehabilitating those who have become addicted. “And women who are addicted to cocaine may not be able to quit even if they know the risk to themselves and their babies. That’s the nature of addiction. Each year, a third of a million babies are born who show signs of being affected by illicit drug use.”

Cocaine-abusing women put their babies at risk for birth defects like abnormalities of the brain, skull, intestines, genitals and urinary tracts. Some affected babies may be born with symptoms of stroke or suffer deformed arms or legs.

If a newborn cocaine-exposed baby manages to escape birth defects, he or she may still go through a period of drug withdrawal marked by poor sleep, trembling, irritability and an increased risk of sudden death. They may feed poorly and suffer from vomiting or diarrhea.

“No baby should be forced to experience these terrible symptoms,” added Bobby. “Proper care for a pregnant woman including effective drug rehabilitation treatment can reduce the chance of cocaine-related birth defects. What is even better is for a women of child-bearing years to enter a drug recovery program before she becomes pregnant.”

The Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation program provides women with a chance for lasting sobriety that can save their lives and the lives of their future babies. In Narconon centers around the world, seven out of ten graduates, both men and women, go home to lead sober, productive live.

Children exposed to methamphetamine manufacture and abuse often suffer tragic effects from the exposure and parental neglect.

When adults ruin their own lives by using or manufacturing methamphetmine, at least they had a choice in the matter. But for children endangered by meth abuse and addiction or by living in a home used for meth production, they don’t have a choice.

Unfortunately, the effects of meth addiction are practically calculated to set up a mental condition that is conducive to child neglect, endangerment and abuse. Those high on meth will not feel hungry and so may neglect to provide food for children. Common effects of meth use include paranoia and hallucinations, meaning that parents may not even be in contact with reality, should their child need care.

“A person who has become addicted to methamphetamine will feel that chasing that high is more important than eating, sleeping or caring for their children,” stated Bobby Wiggins, spokesman of the Narconon drug rehabilitation program. Narconon is an international organization that is dedicated to preventing drug abuse and addiction and rehabilitation of those who have become addicted. “Across the nation, hundreds of children each year are injured, killed or repeatedly exposed to toxic, caustic chemicals, drugs or other dangers.”

Story after horrific story can be found in every corner of the U.S. In Tulsa, four children were taken from a home after feces, uncapped needles, human blood sprayed across a wall from a person shooting drugs and other dangers were found throughout the home where meth was being used and sold. The children’s ages ranged from 19 months to 10 years of age. In South Dakota, a baby died after his parents fled a fire that broke out while they were cooking meth. When the parents got to safety, they realized that neither one had brought the baby with them.

In Tennessee alone, more than a thousand children were present on the premises during methamphetamine lab seizures between 2001 and 2010. It’s common for children to test positive for methamphetamine in this situation.

Saving the children starts with saving the caregivers. As much love as a parent has for his or her child, meth may subvert it. That’s why those addicted to drugs or alcohol need the most effective drug rehabilitation program possible. For most people, long-term, residential treatment is the solution they need to enable them to become productive citizens and trustworthy parents once again.

The Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation program, delivered in countries around the world and across the United States, allows participants to proceed through the phases of recovery at their own pace. The program focuses on thorough detoxification using dry-heat sauna, exercise and nutritional supplements and extensive training on life skills that may have been destroyed during addiction.

Addicts to often lose their sense of self-esteem and personal integrity while they are addicted. The Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation program not only helps each person develop a new, drug-free lifestyle, it also helps lift the person out of the depression and guilt that results from addiction and replaces it with an understanding and ability to practice heightened personal ethics.

With a healthier, detoxified body, knowledge how to make drug-free decisions and a fresh understanding of ethics, seven out of ten graduates from the Narconon program stay clean and sober when they go home.

“Meth Home” registries fail to protect people from contaminated homes previously used for methamphetamine manufacture.

Home Sweet Home? Not if it Was Home to a Methamphetamine Lab Narconon Spokesperson Warns

“Meth Home” registries fail to protect people from contaminated homes previously used for methamphetamine manufacture.

Across the nation increasing manufacture and use of methamphetamine means that the lovely home you just bought for your growing family could be your worst nightmare. As has happened hundreds of times in every state in the nation families or individuals move into homes where methamphetamine was manufactured by a former owner or renter. Due to high levels of contamination parents may come down with kidney problems or migraines children may begin to suffer from serious asthma attacks and what is termed “failure to thrive” in infants.

The problem has become so pervasive that the Drug Enforcement Agency established a national registry for “meth houses” at http://www.justice.gov/dea/seizures/index.html.

When we talk about problems with drug abuse and addiction, we usually focus on the addicts and crime associated with the selling and taking of drugs. This is a whole other part of the drug abuse problem in America that is not often discussed. Narconon is an international organization that is dedicated to preventing drugs abuse and addiction and rehabilitation of those who have become addicted.

Missouri has been particularly hard hit by meth seizures. Year after year they have some of the highest lab bust statistics of any state. They passed a law stating that an owner who knew of meth lab activity in the house had to reveal this fact to prospective owners. But professional contractors in the state estimate that as many as 90 percent of meth houses are never detected and thus are never reported.

Missouri state authorities list 1284 meth busts in 2006 1285 in 2007 1487 in 2008 1774 in 2009 and 1242 through August of 2010. But the DEA registry lists just 2756 meth houses. Since reporting is voluntary the Registry is better than nothing but does not serve the purpose of keeping people safe.

One of the best ways to know if the lovely home you wish to purchase formerly housed meth manufacture is to start with the neighbors. Before you buy ask the residents on both sides and across the street if there was any police activity at the house. Ask about strong foul odors or blacked out windows or strange items in the trash. Any of these indicators can point to methamphetamine manufacture. The Department of Health of many states will provide guidelines on cleaning up meth-contaminated homes. Some companies that do mold remediation are also qualified to de-contaminate meth houses.

Essential in the effort to combat methamphetamine abuse and thus reduce demand for the drug are effective drug education for youth and drug rehabilitation treatment for those who fall to this quickly addictive and physically damaging drug.

Narconon organizations around the world provide drug education to young people to help them understand the problems that result from abusing drugs. It has proven effective in reducing the drug use among young people who have received the curriculum. And the Narconon drug treatment program enables seven out of ten graduates to remain drug free after they return home. And that includes those recovering from methamphetamine addiction.

The director of Narconon used this information to stress the need for effective drug education and rehab programs. Despite the limited nature of this analysis it clearly illustrates the need for improved services in this area. Narconon is an international organization that is dedicated to preventing drugs abuse and addiction and rehabilitation of those who have become addicted. This is an objective analysis unlike a telephone survey that asks people about their drug use. This evidence is really a wake-up call for those who think that drug use and addiction in America are not too bad or not too widespread.

The Narconon drug and alcohol rehabilitation program offers an example of drug rehab that creates a positive effect. The Narconon program is a long-term residential program that uses no drugs of any kind during the rehab process. They learn new life skills that enable them to make drug-free decisions for the rest of their lives. Seven out of ten Narconon graduates go home to live drug-free lives.

The Narconon drug and alcohol rehab program is offered in cities across the United States and in forty other countries around the world. Since 1966 Narconon has been saving lives from drug and alcohol addiction. Many Narconon centers also offer drug education courses that have proven effective in changing the patterns of drug use among the students receiving the curriculum.

Narconon reports about prescription drugs and pill mills as well as what some of the Narconon centers expansion in 2009

- Pill Mills Major Contributor To Prescription Drug Epidemic: Prescription drugs as just as harmful as any other drug when abused. In fact, many prescription painkillers are greatly addictive and do have serious side effects. The Narconon procedure fortunately handles the prescription drug addict just as it does the Heroin addict, however the unfortunate part is that legally operating clinics are the new source of addicts in our country.

- Narconon Offers The Way to Happiness for Addicts: Narconon specializes in drug prevention and rehabilitation. Often a drug addict started on drugs or alcohol to obtain some sense of happiness. Drugs give one a false sense of well being initially only to have serious consequences later on. When someone does drugs a second and third time each time the users are trying to obtain that initial feel of well-being. As addiction carries on it starts to take more and more of the same drug to create the desired effect.

- Celebrity Addiction A Growing Tragedy: Narconon handles addiction to all forms of substance abuse. Narconon has the highest percentage of permanent recovery from addiction in the industry. Along with addiction there are both physical and mental factors to address. Drug cravings can be a very real, harmful and insidious part of addiction. With prescription medicine it can and does appear to creep up on one as one is usually required to take a particular painkiller for a certain period of time.

- Narconon Drug Rehabilitation Program Restores Morals to Drug Addicts: … With this addition to the Narconon program its graduates not only stay off drugs but as well remain out of legal trouble after the Narconon program since they now understand what it means to live morally and how real happiness doesn’t lie in immoral acts.

- Addiction Treatment Provided by Pill Mills Concern Many: Mary Rieser a certified chemical dependency counselor and director of Narconon of Georgia drug rehabilitation center says, “We can’t just cover up addiction with a dependency on pharmaceuticals. Addiction is about behavior and taking one pill in substitution of another is not a change. We need to provide effective addiction treatment programs not more medications.”

- The Way To Happiness Guides Addict To a Drug-Free Life: Sam, a recent graduate from Narconon Louisiana, came into the program because he was suffering from an addiction to prescription drugs. Like most addicts he neglected many things in his life in order to keep using. But it wasn’t till he came to a key point in his treatment at the Narconon drug rehabilitation program that he could really see this and consequently stop it permanently. (http://www.transworldnews.com/NewsStory.aspx?id=155174&cat=15)

- Narconon Louisiana Expands in 2009: …But for those whose lives have been ravaged by addiction, there have also been many who have been helped through drug abuse treatment centers all over the world. Narconon Louisiana, a residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, were able to help more than 120 people that enrolled on the program in 2009. (http://www.transworldnews.com/NewsStory.aspx?id=156046&cat=10)

- Narconon Drug Rehab Teaches Addicts To Be Temperate: James*, a former drug addict, knows exactly what it feels like when your life is spinning out of control. “A year ago I was at my worse. I had no control; every day was spent looking for my next shot of heroin and if I came across another type of drug I would use it immediately.” This type of out of control behavior is what led James to enroll in a drug rehab program called Narconon Louisiana where he was able to complete a course called The Way To Happiness; a common sense guide to moral living. (*see story for details at http://www.transworldnews.com/NewsStory.aspx?id=155543&cat=10)

- Narconon Freedom Center Instills Moral Values in Drug Addicts: It is for this reason that the Narconon program in Michigan has as part of its program The Way to Happiness, a non-religious moral code based on common sense. … With Narconon Freedom Center using The Way to Happiness as part of their drug rehabilitation program and instilling moral values into its students, students are far less likely to travel down the same path that led to their demise. (http://www.transworldnews.com/NewsStory.aspx?id=156446&cat=10)

- Narconon Michigan Has Successful Year In 2009: This last year, 2009, proved to be a very successful year for Narconon Freedom Center in rehabilitating many from drug and alcohol addiction. Drug addiction seems to be a hard fact of life. There are hardly any of us who don’t know of someone struggling with a drug or alcohol problem.
