no more wineAlcohol is rarely viewed as a dangerous drug substance, or even as any sort of drug substance at all.  It is a legal and socially acceptable substance that many individuals see no harm in imbibing on occasion.  In actual fact, however, even casual alcohol consumption can create unwanted effects in the individual, and can lead to alcohol abuse and addiction problems. libraryIn April, community organizations around the United States observed Alcohol Awareness Month, an event sponsored by the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD). The annual event has been observed since 1987, and this year the NCADD found eager and willing allies in many different Narconon drug rehab centers and drug prevention education groups around the nation. One of these was in Louisiana, where the Narconon New Life Retreat in Denham Springs, near the capital city of Baton Rouge, set up a display in the local library to share vital information about the dangers of heavy drinking and alcohol abuse. The display was designed to focus on the negative impact that alcohol has on the local community, and it conveyed a powerful message to the people who saw it. It was set up to be visually engaging and highly impactful, with shocking statistics about the ways in which alcohol causes harm and disruption to individuals, families and the general community. To help in bringing home the message, each statistic was accompanied by a series of photographs which helped to present a vivid and powerful message to passers by. Read the rest of this entry »

guy sitting in grassAs we approach the end of the school year and high school juniors and seniors get ready for their prom, not all of them are as excited or have as much to look forward to as their classmates. For all too many high school students, prom season is just another painful reminder of what they don’t have. While their peers are out shopping for dresses, many young women are forced to make difficult choices about what they can and cannot afford, and many end up deciding that they can’t afford to take part in the special night for the simple reason that they don’t have the money to buy a gown. Just like Cinderella, they are left wishing that they could attend the ball with their Prince Charming, but instead find themselves left at home. Fortunately, and also just like Cinderella, some of these girls get a chance to have their prom dreams come true after all. This is the case in Louisiana, where The Cinderella Project offers an opportunity to go to the prom wearing a beautiful gown thanks to donations from the community and to the hard work of volunteers. A team from the Narconon New Life Retreat center in Denham Springs recently spent a day volunteering with this organization, and they were pleased to contribute their efforts to support the cause. narconon graduateAlcohol and drug use are not confined to the shadowy corners of society. Over the past few decades, they have worked their way into being an accepted form of “recreation” in the lives of far too many people, young an old alike. The transformation has been so insidious that many young people now consider alcohol and drug use to be a rite of passage into adulthood. Read the rest of this entry »

recoverySeptember is National Recovery Month, and the team at the Narconon New Life Retreat are doing their part to celebrate the event. National Recovery Month is sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and 2013 marks its 24th year. The theme of this year’s National Recovery Month is “Join the Voices for Recovery: Together on Pathways to Wellness,” and organizations around the United States are holding events and putting on activities that have the goal of promoting the fact that their is life after drug and alcohol addiction. All too many people who are struggling with addiction, including the addict and his or her friends and family, tend to adopt a mindset that focuses on the addiction and the battle to recover, and they do not place enough attention on the future and what will come after recovery. Devoting more thought to life after recovery and developing positive goals for the future helps to give an addict hope and motivation to support him or her during rehab. All of this fits right in with the principles of the Narconon program, so the staff and students at the New Life Retreat were eager to join in and support the SAMHSA activities with events at the local center.
