UN flagEarlier this month, Narconon International published a new video online which gives a broad overview of some of the activities that Narconon organizations around the nation, and indeed around the world, were engaged in last year on June the 26th. Why focus on that date? The 26th of June, 2013 was the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse. In fact, that date is fixed on the calendar as the day every year when the UN observes that event, an event which dates back to its inception in 1987. It has now been more than 27 years since the UN General Assembly voted to designate June 26th as the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse, and the event has become a highly anticipated occasion on the calendars of many in the fields of addiction treatment and public health. videoIt’s the downfall of all too many an attempt to quit using drugs or alcohol: cravings. How can you get over the enormously powerful cravings that you feel when you try to get sober? Is it even possible, or will you have to spend the rest of your life as a “recovering addict,” learning to cope with your cravings and trying, hopefully, to stay clean? In it, we learn that even if an addicted person wants with all his heart to get clean, intense cravings may make achieving sobriety seem impossible. The person may feel and act crazy, completely out of control, until he or she gets more of the drug. This compulsion to get high or drunk can drive a person to extremes, as in the case of a young man featured in the Narconon video: Read the rest of this entry »

How can a drug addict continue to use despite knowing what terrible risks are associated with substance abuse? These questions and others like them are ones that constantly come to mind for those who have family members or friends who are drug addicts. Life with an addict presents this baffling conundrum, of wondering how someone you love so much can have such an enormous blind spot. It is a commonly recognized situation. Indeed, many definitions of addiction describe it as a condition in which a person continues to drink alcohol or use drugs despite recognizing that the substance abuse is causing severe problems or even ruining the person’s life. Now, we can get a better insight into what is going on in the mind of a drug addict, and specifically how it is that a person in that position can somehow justify continued substance abuse rather than taking effective action to quit. Narconon International has recently shared a video online in which a young woman discusses her own background as an addict and explains the thoughts that were holding her back from making positive change in her life.
