The Founding Of The Narconon Program

By statistic, the Narconon program is one of the most successful drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs in existence. It certainly holds its place amongst the most helpful, valuable organizations and programs ever developed for the benefit of the drug addict or alcoholic.

It was NOT founded by an Albert Schweitzer or a Dr. Tom Dooley.

The Beginnings Of The Narconon Program

The Narconon program was founded in 1966 by William Benitez, an inmate incarcerated in the Arizona State Prison. Benitez was a "hard core", career criminal and a confirmed (and seemingly incurable) heroin addict. He had chanced to read a book (The Fundamentals Of Thought) written by American author and philosopher, L. Ron Hubbard. Having read the book, he began to apply some of the principles he had learned from it. Working with dozens of his fellow inmates (and heroin addicts) they were able to put an end to their own addictions. As a result, Mr. Benitez woke up one morning, jumped off his bunk and made the decision to establish a drug rehabilitation program in the prison, a program based on the very principles that he and the others had been successfully applying. It took some time and repeated requests made to the prison authorities to gain permission to establish this new program officially but, thanks to the persistence of this young, incurable addict's determination to help his fellow addicts, permission was finally granted.

Thus, the Narconon program was born. In the forty-five years that have passed since Mr. Benitez made that decision, Narconon has grown to a network of more than 120 rehabilitation centers, delivering full residential rehab programs, non-residential services and providing drug education to public and private school students within their geographical areas. Staffed by highly dedicated employees and volunteers, many of whom have had their own lives bettered or even saved by this program, Narconon has touched, and bettered, the lives of tens of thousands of addicts and alcoholics and provided sound, effective drug education to several millions more.

An unquestionable visionary, Mr. Hubbard wrote these words in the mid-twentieth century:

"You may have noticed that society is rapidly going downhill... And the most serious part of this is that drugs, both medical and street drugs, have disabled a majority of those who could have handled it, including the political leaders, and have even paralyzed the coming generations."

~~ L. Ron Hubbard

Already a problem when he wrote these words, he was able to foresee the seriousness of the situation and to predict that it would become far more serious. Thus, when Willie Benitez wrote him a letter asking if there were any other techniques he had developed which might be of value to his fledgling organization, he asked a member of the staff of one of his organizations to write to Mr. Benitez and to offer support and help to him.

A not-for-profit, public benefit corporation, Narconon delivers its unique program, which is dedicated to eliminating drug abuse through drug prevention, drug education and drug rehabilitation.

Comprising more than 120 rehabilitation and drug prevention centers around the world, Narconon centers produce drug-free graduates, who have demonstrated they can live stable, ethical, productive, drug-free lives. The Narconon drug prevention centers educate hundreds of thousands of people each year with live presentations, video presentations and written materials.

The Narconon drug rehabilitation program is entirely drug-free and is based on the social education program model. The key to the success of the Narconon program is the body of drug rehabilitation methodology developed and written by American author and humanitarian, L. Ron Hubbard. This methodology has been used successfully by hundreds of thousands of people around the world to rid themselves of the need for drugs and to regain control of their lives.

The Narconon drug prevention and education program gains its success in preventing drug use through effective educational programs with school children, parents and educators, providing training to peer leaders and professionals, and disseminating broad information campaigns.

Headquartered in Hollywood, California, Narconon International, the administrative and promotional coordinating office, was founded and staffed years after the network of individual Narconon centers had existed. Narconon International licenses all Narconon centers worldwide. In addition to providing managerial expertise to the network, its main function is the monitoring and supporting the highest level of technical and administrative excellence throughout the network. This international office spearheads drug education delivery and other drug prevention events to hundreds of thousands of students and others in California and coordinates and supervises these activities in other geographical areas. Supporting the office is Friends of Narconon International, whose staff have produced and distributed drug education videos and curriculum including The Truth About Drugs: What is it? and Marijuana: The Myth. The Narconon International Science Advisory Board sponsors research, outcome studies, and international peer-review conferences on the subject of L. Ron Hubbard's sauna detoxification protocol (a major component of the Narconon program), such diverse locations as Los Angeles in 1995, Stockholm in 1997, and Oklahoma in 2001.
