 The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, under the United States Department of Health and Human Services, is responsible for building resilience and facilitating recovery for people with or at risk for substance abuse and mental illness.  As part of this mission, SAMHSA is promoting the President's Faith-Based and Community Initiative.  The guiding principle behind the initiative is that faith-based charities should be able to compete on an equal footing for public dollars to provide public services.  President Bush believes that the Federal government, within the framework of Constitutional church-state guidelines, should encourage faith-based charities to reach out with compassion to help even more people in need.

Alcohol and other drug addiction touches every congregation, almost every family across America. Can something be done? Certainly,
any person of good will would
say that if something effective
could be done, it should be.

For over three decades Narconon International has been working with different faith communities across the United States and around the world to help pastors and ministers of all religions learn how to help members of their congregations and communities with drug or alcohol problems--including those who do not seem ready to reach for help. God and spirituality should be part of it, but our idea is to bring professional partners together with churches to facilitate effective recovery.
And recovery IS possible.

“Faith-Based Addictions Intervention: Integrating Spiritual/Religious Approaches with Scientific Motivational
Counseling”
by John Martin, Ph.D.

Dr. Martin delivers a rousing workshop on how to approach someone who has
an alcohol or other drug problem, how to motivate him or her to reach for
treatment.

“Grant Writing for Faith-Based Partnerships”
by William E. Link, Ph.D.

Dr. Link has designed and delivered college level substance abuse prevention and treatment courses. He will deliver a 4-session workshop teaching grant writing, tailored for faith-based partnerships.

“Literacy & Self Respect: Getting Youth
Off the Streets and Back On Track”
by Rev. Alfreddie Johnson, A True Faith Christian Center;
Founder, World Literacy Crusade

The World Literacy Crusade began in 1992 as a community
response to the Los Angeles riots. Rev. Johnson incorporated into his existing inner-city youth program a new development – “study technology,” new methods of awakening in youth the desire to learn to read, and teaching them how to overcome the barriers to study, based on the work of author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard.

“Developing Faith-Based, Peer-Lead Recovery Support Services”
by David L. Whiters, Recovery Associates of Atlanta

David Whiters, doctoral student, is a Level II Addictions Counselor and founder of Recovery Consultants of Atlanta, a faith-based, peer-lead Initiative. His workshop will teach community- based organizations how to partner with faith institutions to develop services that benefit individuals and families impacted by substance abuse.

“Once they decide they do want to come off drugs … then what?”

Rev. McLaughlin faced this problem in his own congregation. It wasn’t being spoken of, but it was there – families with someone suffering from alcohol or other drug problems. He even knew how to get family members to open up and talk about it. But what could then be done?

He discovered the Narconon First Step Program of nutritional and hands-on care which could be taught to families to help their own. He’s been using it with his own congregation ever since and will deliver a workshop to share it with you.
